This morning during our family devotion, I spoke on the power of words. It was very powerful and I felt I should share it here. We are going to be reading from the Word so get ready. Words are very powerful; they are capable of altering your destiny. As one of my friends says, your destiny is in your mouth.
If you want a change in your life, the power to cause that change is through your words. You can speak it into existence. Romans 4:17b (NKJV), who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; Whatever you want to see happening in your life, say it, call it forth, keep saying it. You may not believe it at first, but as you keep saying it, you will start believing it. A friend of mine said to me, your life right now is the result of the things you said or did not say five (5) years ago.
There’s a statement we’ve heard so much, “From hand to mouth”, which means when someone is barely able to feed, but can I beg to differ, the right statement should be “from mouth to hand”, meaning, it’s the product of your mouth that you will eat. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 (MSG) Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. What I’m telling you to do is not fiction, it is real and it works.
Many years ago, when I was still at the University, I kept telling whoever cared to listen that I wouldn’t teach during youth service. I just do not like teaching and people kept telling me, corpers teach but I kept saying I won’t teach. Funny enough I was posted to a school, but the school rejected me and I eventually served in a bank.
Romans 3:4b (NKJV), That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged. Your words are capable of putting you into trouble and are also capable of delivering you; use them wisely.
If you keep quiet, your destiny will be silent. Don’t keep quiet, keep saying the things you want and it shall come to pass. Also you can’t just be speaking empty words; you need to speak God’s word. Inherent in the Word of God is the power to change any situation. It is the medicine that can solve every issue.
In line with the power of words, is another angle I would like to speak from.
First let’s look at James 3:2-6 (NIV) We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Our mouth is so powerful that it can corrupt our whole body; it has the power to set your life on fire. Don’t just speak anyhow, the bible says in Proverbs 10:11 (NKJV), The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked. Your mouth should be a well of life; which means you should only speak words that give life, don’t speak negatively, corrupt talk should not be found from your lips. If violent words proceed from your mouth, the bible has termed you Wicked.
Situations that can make us depressed are all around us; let’s not worsen things by being negative. Let’s be so positive that people who are depressed or in need of encouragement know that they can get that from us. Be an encourager, not a discourager. Let your words lift people up not the other way round.
Proverbs 10:20 (NKJV), The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little. Your tongue is precious before God, so you cannot afford to speak anyhow. What do you with something precious? You take care of it, you treat it well, and that’s what you should do with your tongue. When you slander people, gossip, or speak vain words, what you are literally saying is that I am worth little.
What should you do? Confess positively. Get a list of scriptures that pertains to your situation and be speaking it, a change will come.
Heaven is counting on you to treat your tongue as a precious vessel. Your destiny is counting on you to speak the right words. If you don’t get anything from what I’ve said so far, get this: YOUR LIFE GOES IN THE DIRECTION OF YOUR MOUTH.
I want you to pray today that God will discipline you to speak rightly and that He will align your words with His word.
Thank you for reading.
