This is a continuation of the first part in this series, you can read that here.

How do you eat God’s Word?

1.     Read the Word: have a definite schedule for the Word. It could be first thing in the morning or any other time that is best. But you must make sure to read the Word every day of your life; it is the food your spirit strives on. You cannot succeed without it. To do this effectively,

Have a schedule and follow it strictly: If you are like me that don’t like devotionals, you can do a chapter or a character study. For example, I am presently studying the book of Romans. I read a chapter a day. If you are busy to study God’s Word then you are too busy. You must make out time.

For convenience I would recommend downloading the Bible App on your phone, with that you can read the bible every day, everywhere you are. No excuses. If you download the you version bible App, there are study plans, which help you read the bible every day. I try as much as possible to have a study plan always. I have partaken in the read your bible for 90days challenge, knowing your purpose plan. Basically, there are different plans to almost every topic on earth ranging from relationships, love, prayer etc.

2.   Study the Word: This is more than reading a passage. Acts 17:11 As you study memorise scriptures, take a step further by writing it down. Presently this is what I do. I have a book where I write memory verses. Each day I study the book of Romans, I pick out one verse that spoke to me, memorise it and then write it down.   Write down key thoughts. Look up things you do not know. In particular, apply it personally. Effective Bible study is application-oriented. The surest way to hide God’s Word in our hearts is to memorize it.

As you study the scriptures, make sure you study in a place free from distractions. If there’s one thing the devil doesn’t want you to do, is studying the scriptures; and he will bring all forms of distractions your way. Distractions come in different ways, social media, TV, our phones, people, sleep, activities etc. when you wake up in the morning, what is the first thing you do, do you pick your phone or your bible? Or do you switch on your TV? Recently, I’ve started discipline myself that until I read my bible I won’t switch on the TV or my phone. I love to watch TV but I also know feeding from the Word is important. You can make a commitment also not to do certain things until you have had your time with God.

Another thing is, don’t rush your time of devotion. If you rush it will just look like you’re having a devotion just as part of a routine, and if you have that mindset you won’t get anything from God.

3.    Read books that would help you study the scriptures. One of such books which I personally use and would recommend is Ending your day Right by Joyce Meyer. It’s a devotion for every evening of the year.

4.    Prepare your heart to receive from God. There’s no essence of studying God’s word if there’s no change in your life. From your personal notes, pray about the things you’ve received asking God to change your life and make you more like Him.

If we are to be effective Christians, then we should go back to studying the Word and communicating with God.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV), These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
