I have being wanting to write on this sensitive issue of dressing. My goal was to write an article that non-Christians would find useful but, my target today is mainly Christians. This is so because it’s unfortunate that the people you believe should know better are the ones misbehaving (forgive my language).
People feel afraid (I am too) to talk about dressing particularly amongst Christian women; to cover themselves up; we’re scared they’ll think we’re judging or acting out of self-righteousness.
This issue of dressing pertains more to women than to men because basically women have curves and shapes, we have very visible parts that God made for beauty and attractiveness, and men generally are moved by what they see. That is not to say, modesty in dressing doesn’t pertain to men; it does.
In starting this, it is necessary to point out the purpose of clothing. In the beginning, when God made man; he was naked but he didn’t know. It was Sin (the fall of man) that made man conscious of the fact that he was naked. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Genesis 3:7
We see in vs 21, The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. So basically, the essence of clothing is to cover up our nakedness. In view of this, we can safely say that any cloth that doesn’t cover up our nakedness should not be worn.
Its unfortunates though that in the name of fashion we sometimes wear clothes that are not right or befitting for a lady/guy who professes Christ; clothes that do not properly cover our nakedness.
How should Christian Ladies dress?
We should dress modestly. Modesty is not first an issue of clothing. It is primarily an issue of the heart. I always tell people that if truly, one has the Spirit of God, there are certain ways you wouldn’t dress. There was a certain day I was on my way to Church, and I picked a particular gown, and the Holy Spirit told me; you can’t wear that dress to church, it’s too short. “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety”, 1 Timothy 2:9 (NIV). If you have the Spirit of God inside of you, He will convict you if you want to wear a wrong dress out. It is my opinion that cleavage showing, high thigh silt, are all wrong.
We should dress the way you want to be addressed. I know we’ve all heard this before, but the saying is very true. If you want people to listen to you; Dress the message. The clothes you wear and the way you groom yourself will change the way other people hear what you say. It will determine whether they listen or ignore, whether they trust you or not.
We shouldn’t dress in a provocative way, in this case I mean sexually, except of course it’s for your husband (and he’s the only one that would see you). Ladies, we have a responsibility to help our brothers in Christ by dressing modestly, and while they are responsible for their thoughts and actions, I believe God will hold us accountable when we knowingly dress immodestly for the purpose of looking sexy. Sometimes, I as a lady would be distracted by a fellow woman’s dress, I often ask myself how much more the men? “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart”,
Matthew 5:28 (NIV).
A woman dressing immodestly is not an excuse for any man to sin, no. Simply because a lady dresses provocatively does not give any man the right to molest or rape her. Everyone is responsible for his/her own actions; you can’t blame your sin on the action of another.
We shouldn’t wear skin tight clothes. Asides the fact that; you wouldn’t be comfortable, it’s sexually appealing; and it doesn’t make you look good.
We should dress in accordance with our body types. For example, if you have a big tummy, don’t wear mermaid dresses, rather wear peplum dresses; it covers your tummy. If you’re plus size, don’t squeeze yourself into a small dress, it doesn’t make you look good. Irrespective of your body type, wear flattering clothes and colours, research on the type of dresses that would fit you.
We should wear clothes that are appropriate for each occasion. For example, you can’t attend a wedding in sweatpants. Research on the type of clothes that you should wear to a particular occasion. Another example is the way we dress to church, some dresses we wear to church; we wouldn’t be able to wear it for an interview or a meeting with the President.
We should wear beautiful clothes. Modesty is not an excuse to look shabby. We should look smart at every point in time. There’s nothing like a gorgeously dressed woman who is modest but looking smart and on point. A Christian woman/man should not look dirty; your appearance should be neat, clean and smart. You can be well covered and beautiful at the same time.
Why should we dress well? Because it boosts your confidence and moreover it gives people a good first impression about you.
I would like to say to ladies that, don’t dress in a sexy way because of a man. Be true to who you are. Do you want a man or a boy to be attracted to you simply because of sexual desire or lust? That’s what prostitutes do. Or do you want to attract a man because he sees something much more valuable in you than just outward beauty? What kind of man do you want to attract? The way you dress sends that message.
For the men, this post may seem largely about women, but indecent dressing can also apply to you. It irritates me when I see men sagging, or unbuttoning shirts, leaving the chest open. Please, we don’t want to see your boxers or your chest.
To Parents, please don’t dress your children in clothes you won’t approve them to wear when they’re older.
To Churches, please let’s stop embarrassing people who come to church with dresses you term inappropriate. Some may not know that what they’re wearing is inappropriate. In dressing, we should be aware that some people are ignorant, rebellious or indifferent. Whatever we do, we should do out of love.
In summary, I would like to say that; as Children of God, we cannot afford to just dress anyhow. Our lives are mirrors that should reflect Christ in every way. Moreover, we should set godly examples. May God help us all.
I always love to hear from you; kindly leave a comment; so I can know your thoughts about this issue. God bless you.
