Why do we give offerings? That’s a question I’ve being asking myself for a while now. I believe the Lord wants us to address this issue now. I don’t know about your church, but in my church whenever it’s offering time we have to file out to drop our offerings.

There was a time, some people wanted the idea kicked but my Pastor said no, we should dance out and give our offerings. After all in 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV), the bible says “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver”.
Do you give out of compulsion ( so that people will not say a whole me does not have offering), or do you give because you just have to( when you don’t know the essence of giving, you give because it’s part of a church routine) or you give because you feel you are doing the Church or the Pastor a favour( as if it’s your offering that’s keeping the church) or do you give out of shame or guilt( you think you can bribe God not to punish you for a sin you committed, so you give so that God can overlook your sin and your rub your shoulders because you dropped an offering? Or do you give out of a loving, thankful and cheerful heart?
What is the motive behind your giving an offering in church? Let’s check our motive well.
Some people all together do not give offerings or tithes in church, because as far as they are concerned, the money goes to the Pastor and the guy already has more than enough or because they feel the church is stealing their precious hard earned money, very hilarious.
If you have the mindset that the Pastor is stealing your money, what are you even doing in that church, why are you feeding spiritually from there and you have refused to contribute your own quota there, don’t you think that’s selfish?
Some people do not give offerings altogether because they feel what they have is very little, it’s not even enough (why should I give out of the little I have?).
I want us to understand that every offering or tithes we give in the house of God are unto God, not the church or the Pastor, you are not doing anybody but yourself a favour.  Malachi 3:8 (NKJV), “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings”.
The reason why a lot of Christians are poor is because they are stingy towards the God who gave them. Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV), “Honour the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine”.
If you were in the position of God would you give someone money when you know the person would turn around and be wicked to you?
If you have One thousand(N1000) in your pocket, don’t give God Hundred naira(N100), if there’s N500 in your pocket, don’t look for change to split it so you can give N50. Parents don’t give your children N10 or N20 as an offering; the amount of offering you give should not be synonymous with your age. Deuteronomy 16:17 (NKJV), “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you. Teach your children how to give to God and giving N10 doesn’t cut it.
This period of our country’s recession is the best period to sow, Genesis 26 vs 1 (NKJV), “There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. And in verse 12 -14, Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him. The man began to prosper and continued prospering until he became very prosperous; for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him. Look for different ways, places and people to sow, rejoice at every opportunity you have to give, in the end, you will be glad you did.
I urge every one of us not to come to the house of the Lord empty especially when you have Psalm 96:7-9 (NKJV), “Give to the Lord the glory due to His name; Bring an offering and come into His courts.
Let’s change the attitude we have towards giving, put your trust in Him and watch the windows of Heaven flood you with His blessings.
I would love to hear from you, kindly leave a comment. Thank you.
