“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith”. 1John 5:4 (NKJV)
For the purposes of our considerations this week, God’s will and ways will be referred to as His point of view.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts”. Isaiah 55:9 (KJV)
On Tuesday, we looked at the discipline of prayer as necessary to your imbibing God’s point of view in all things. Our Father desires and requires that we live and express a higher quality of life than the natural man – the one without Christ as Saviour and Lord – does.
Simply put, the man without Christ lives by the dictates of his carnal nature – the whims and caprices of his flesh. But the one born of God is empowered to obey the dictates of the Holy Spirit, once he chooses to and so lives in the victory over sin and death freely given in Christ.
Our faith is this victory (1John 5:4); and our faith is our simple trust and confidence in God – who He is and what He says and promises. So it follows that if you do not know God and what He says and promises, you cannot have faith (Romans 10:17). Another discipline therefore necessary to imbibing God’s point of view is your giving quality time to studying the Word of God.
“Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman (tested by trial) who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth”. 2Timothy 2:15 (Amp.)
Truth be told, that you are disciplined to spend time in prayer will yield little if you do not approach your times of conversation with God from the premise of His Word. Nothing was, is or can be without God’s Word. All our Father’s dealings with us are within the ambit of His Word – God does not operate outside of His Word (John 1:1-3; 15:7).
Living above (in victory over the flesh and in every situation you encounter in life) cannot truly be your experience if you do not know, for yourself, who God is, who you are in Christ and what you have in Christ.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path”.
Psalms 119:105 (KJV)
Your pastor may be a great teacher of the Word of God and may be living in a way that truly models the ‘higher life’, but you still need to study the Bible for yourself. You may watch no other channels on TV than TBN and Daystar, but personal study of the Word of God is imperative if your life must mirror His higher ways and thoughts.
“And now I commend you to God [placing you in His protective, loving care] and [I commend you] to the word of His grace [the counsel and promises of His unmerited favour]. His grace is able to build you up and to give you the [rightful] inheritance among all those who are sanctified [that is, among those who are set apart for God’s purpose- all believers]”. Acts 20:32 (Amp.)
Today is a gift; don’t let it go to waste.
