“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18(NIV)
Yesterday we saw that it is possible and indeed required that we live worry-free. Today we take it a few steps further and see some other humanly impossible things that our higher life demands of us.
Humanly speaking it is impossible to rejoice always because sad things happen sometimes. However, this doesn’t mean that we would be laughing all the time or we would never cry or experience sadness. Joy is of the spirit and not the mind, that’s the reason why it’s possible to be joyful always no matter what’s happening around you. This becomes possible only when you look inside your spirit rather than around you.
Joy is already in your spirit (Galatians 5:22) but you have to cultivate it consciously so that it will show at all times no matter what. This will be a source of inner strength for you no matter what you face (Nehemiah 8:10) and you will find after a while that when faced with challenges joy bubbles up from your spirit.
Most people would feel justified in thinking that the next thing we’re told to do in our scripture reading today is simply impractical. I mean, how can you pray continually? Isn’t that sort of spooky? Won’t you come across as some religious nutcase walking around and muttering to yourself all the time? Not to worry though, because when we’re told to pray continually, one way of explaining it is to say that we are to maintain an open line of communication with Heaven at all times.
So, you may be about your daily activities at work but your spirit is tuned to Heaven’s frequency and able to receive impulses from the Holy Spirit. You develop this by cultivating a close working relationship with the Holy Spirit through fellowshipping with Him in the Word and prayer. It is a spiritual discipline which you must pay the price to develop or else you will grope and stumble through life when you should be soaring in the spirit.
Finally, we’re supposed to give thanks in all circumstances. Excuse me! In all circumstances? Yes, and it’s possible because we thank God not for bad circumstances but for being with us all the time no matter how things go.
The attitude of being deliberately thankful is one you must develop if you are to truly express this life in God you’ve been called to live. It won’t be easy, but you must do it. Even when you’re in dire need, thank Him sincerely. When things seem to be going haywire, give Him thanks.
You’ve been called to walk daily in what ordinary, body-ruled people call impossible. So, go ahead and be who you were created to be: be joyful all the time, pray without stopping and give thanks no matter what.
Today is a gift; don’t let it go to waste.
